Questions before you book
Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed. You can contact us directly and book a consultation. However insurance companies do not cover your care unless you were referred by an optometrist or GP, so please do obtain a referral if you have insurance.

I've been referred to another specialist. Can I still come to you?

Yes. Tell us who you saw and what the referral was for — we'll contact them directly and arrange for the paperwork to be transferred. You don't need to do anything else.

Are you covered for ACC care?

Yes. The Eye Surgery has accreditation for ACC outpatient and surgical care.

What does a first consultation involve?

Your first appointment will include a full assessment of your eyes. Depending on what you've been referred for, this may involve imaging, measurements, or other tests — all done here, at the same visit.

How long do appointments take?

The time taken varies a lot, depending on the type of consultation. It can take a long time to be seen in an eye clinic, but there are good reasons for this. We sometimes take many tests of your eyes, and you get the results at the same appointment, and often perform treatments such as laser as well: this can be several separate appointments in other healthcare settings. Eyedrops to dilate your pupils are often used, and take 20 minutes to work. Some of our appointment types are 2-3 hours.

What does it cost to be seen?

The fees for a consultation depend on its complexity and any tests performed: a more expensive appointment can be several hundred dollars.

The all-inclusive price for cataract surgery is $4,270 for one eye or $8,540 for both. This is on the website before you call, and it does not change. It includes surgery, the surgeon's fee, anaesthetic, the facility, and six weeks of follow-up.

Is my care covered by my health insurance?

We work with all New Zealand health insurers and ACC. We recommend you contact your insurance provider to check what cover you have for ophthalmic care with us. If needed we can provide you with information or quotes before your appointment.

Where do I park?

The Eye Surgery has its own large car park. There are more than 45 parking spaces directly outside the building, with covered drop-off and pick-up. The entrance is single level from the car park — no steps.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Your glasses or contact lenses, a list of any eye drops or medications you currently use, and your health insurance details if you have cover. If you've had recent eye tests or imaging done elsewhere, bring those too — or let us know who has them and we can request them directly.

Can someone come with me?

Yes, and we encourage it. For many appointment types or surgery you will not be able to drive afterwards. There is comfortable seating in the reception area and the building is single-level throughout.
